WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- A 69-year-old Ann Arbor man died after a kayak carrying him and his grandson overturned on Horseshoe Lake.

The grandson was pulled from the water, but the Ann Arbor man went under and did not resurface.

The accident happened about 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 on the body of water in Whitmore Lake. Rescuers were called and immediately launched boats and drones to try to locate the man, but they did not.

Divers with the Washtenaw County Dive Team then began using sonar to try to locate the man.

Northfield Township police said the man’s body was later recovered by the drivers and he was pronounced dead at about 2:20 p.m. He was found in 21 feet of water.

“The hearts of the entire Washtenaw and Livingston counties first responders go out to his family for their loss,” Northfield Township Police Chief Martin Smith said in a written statement.

Police said the man’s family was at the scene during the search.
